COATING SELECTION / EQUIPMENT / PRODUCTION
Is your coating right
for your machine?
And is your machine right for your coating?
A coating has to work beyond the sample panel. It needs to suit your application equipment, drying or cure capacity, production speed and handling requirements.
THE WHOLE PROCESS
Coating and equipment
need to work together.
Finishing Performance helps manufacturers assess coating selection against the process they actually run. If a product is difficult to apply, slow to dry, prone to defects or unsuitable for stacking, we investigate the interaction between the coating, equipment and production requirements before recommending changes.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Better drying.
No blocking. Lower coating cost.
THE PROBLEMA coating that did not fit the process.
In a board-coating application, the starting product had been specified based on the coating a customer already used. It proved awkward to run through the equipment, drying was poor, and coated surfaces stuck together after drying and stacking. This sticking is known as blocking.
THE WORKSeveral trials. A practical alternative.
Trials were carried out to find an alternative coating that suited the equipment and downstream handling requirements.
THE RESULTA better match for production.
The selected alternative dried more effectively, avoided blocking, cost less and was less aggressive on the equipment.
Coating selection and machine capability were considered together.
Selected prior project experience underpinning Finishing Performance. Customer, product and supplier names are confidential. Results depend on materials, equipment and operating conditions.
WHEN WE CAN HELP
Start with the issue
holding production back.
01Poor drying or cure
Assess whether the coating and available drying or cure process suit the required output.
02Blocking after stacking
Review coating selection, drying and the handling sequence when coated surfaces stick together.
03Difficult application
Investigate the fit between the coating, substrate and application equipment.
04Production bottlenecks
Consider application, drying and material flow together when finishing limits output.
05New coating or equipment
Develop a trial plan around production requirements before committing to a process change.
06Cost and waste
Assess practical alternatives against finish quality, process performance and coating cost.
PRACTICAL SUPPORT
Understand. Trial. Validate.
01 / Review the processUnderstand your substrate, coating, equipment, current output and handling requirements.
02 / Assess the optionsWork through equipment settings, process changes and coating alternatives with your team and suppliers.
03 / Validate in productionSupport trials and check the finish, drying or cure, and handling performance before implementation.
